Which Santa Lucía Falls Tour Is Right for You? Waterfall Trek vs Bird Watching vs Night Hike
We run three tours in Uvita on the same piece of forest: the Waterfall Trek, the Bird Watching Tour and the Night Hike. People ask us every week which one they should book, and the honest answer is that it depends on who you are, what time you like to be awake, and whether you would rather get wet, look up, or listen. Here is how we explain it at the rancho.

The Waterfall Trek: if you want to swim
This is the tour most people book first, and for good reason: four hours through primary rainforest to three waterfalls you can swim in, then lunch cooked by Yajaira. It is moderate walking with a few shallow river crossings, and the schedule is built around time in the water rather than distance. If you have one morning in Uvita and you want the full picture of what this forest is, this is it. We wrote a full hour-by-hour guide in What to Expect on the Santa Lucía Falls Trek.

The Bird Watching Tour: if you want to look up
The birding tour starts at 5:30 AM because that is when the forest is loudest. The walk itself is gentle and mostly flat, in groups of no more than eight, and the point is not to cover ground but to stop: toucans, motmots, hummingbirds on wild blossoms, and the chance of Pacific-slope species that do not occur elsewhere in the country. Humberto teaches calls as you go, so by the end you are hearing birds before you see them. It ends with gallo pinto, fruit and coffee back at the rancho.

The Night Hike: if you want to listen
After dark the same forest turns into a different place. The night hike is two hours on lantern-lit trails in rubber boots we provide, moving slowly and stopping often for red-eyed tree frogs, poison dart frogs, glass frogs, snakes, and the occasional nocturnal mammal. It is the tour kids talk about for weeks, and the one we recommend as the second experience for anyone who did the trek in the morning. It ends with a snack and a hot drink. If frogs are your thing, our amphibian guide will get you excited before you arrive.

How to combine them
- One day: Waterfall Trek in the morning, beach at Marino Ballena in the afternoon, Night Hike after dinner.
- Two days: add the Bird Watching Tour at dawn on the second day, then a slow breakfast.
- Staying at the villa: guests at Villa Santa Lucía are minutes from the trailhead, so the 5:30 AM birding start and the 7:00 PM night hike stop being early or late.

The trek shows you the forest. The birds and the frogs show you that it is alive.

Frequently asked questions
Can I do more than one tour in a day?
Yes. The bird watching tour ends with breakfast around 8:00 AM, the waterfall trek runs from 8:00 AM to noon, and the night hike starts at 7:00 PM, so two in one day is comfortable and all three is possible with a rest in between.
Which tour is best for young children?
The night hike, because it is short, flat and full of frogs, and the waterfall trek for kids who are already comfortable walking and swimming. The bird watching tour rewards patience, so it suits older children.
Do I need my own equipment?
No. Lanterns and rubber boots are provided on the night hike. For the trek you need swimwear and closed shoes; for birding, closed shoes and, if you have them, binoculars.
Are the tours in English?
All three tours are guided in English and Spanish by members of the family.
