Best Waterfalls Near Uvita, Costa Rica: A Local Family’s Guide
The waterfalls near Uvita are one of the reasons people come to the Costa Ballena, and one of the reasons they stay longer than planned. Between Dominical, Uvita and Ojochal there are more cascades than most visitors will ever see, from famous ones with parking lots to rivers only the local families know. Why Uvita has so many waterfalls
The coastal mountains behind Uvita rise fast, from sea level to more than a thousand meters in a few kilometers, and they catch some of the heaviest rainfall on the Pacific side of Costa Rica. Every ridge sends rivers down toward Marino Ballena National Park, and where the rock changes, the rivers drop. That is the whole secret: steep hills, a lot of rain, and forest that still holds the water.
Nauyaca Waterfalls (Dominical)
The most famous falls in the region and, honestly, deserving of it: a two-tiered cascade on the Barú river with a wide swimming pool at the base. It is a long walk in from the entrance (there are truck and horseback options), it gets busy by mid-morning, and you will share the pool. Go early, bring water, and expect a full day.
Cascada Uvita (the rock slide)
Minutes from the center of Uvita, this small waterfall is known for its natural rock slide, which is exactly as fun and exactly as slippery as it sounds. It is quick, cheap and close, which also means it is rarely quiet. A good afternoon stop after a morning in the hills, not a destination on its own.
Santa Lucía Falls (San Josecito, above Uvita)
Our home. Santa Lucía Falls is a private primary-rainforest reserve about 12 km from Uvita, with two rivers and three main waterfalls, Perla Verde, Príncipe and Corazón Partido, plus dozens of smaller cascades. It is visited only on the guided Waterfall Trek Tour, in groups of 2 to 22, with lunch cooked on the property at the end. The trade-off is simple: you cannot just show up, and in exchange you will not share the pools with anyone but your own group.
Poza Azul and the smaller cascades
Between Dominicalito and Uvita there are several small falls and swimming holes, Poza Azul being the best known, that locals use on hot afternoons. They are short walks from the road, they change with every rainy season, and they are best asked about locally rather than planned around. Waterfall safety in the Costa Ballena
- Rivers rise fast during afternoon storms in the green season. Swim in the morning and get out when the water turns brown.
- Never jump from the top of a fall. Depth changes with every rain, and rocks move.
- Wear shoes with grip in and around the pools; wet rock is the number one cause of injuries here.
- Respect closures and private land. Many falls are on family property, and access depends on visitors behaving well.
